Nick Ferris, Even Marketing Awards Can Be Cool

Nick Ferris is a global marketer with over 25 years of B2B and B2C marketing experience.

I’ve always been amazed, says Nick Ferris, how often marketing teams forgot to enter their work for awards. Some companies are very good at it, but you’d be surprised how many have not even thought about it. So what are the advantages of entering for marketing awards?

In most industries there are awards - whether it’s Oscars or Best Car Design of the Year. Marketing is no exception and for any marketer receiving an award can be a welcome recognition by their peers for their hard work and innovation says Nick Ferris. Many marketers are ‘behind the scenes’ personality types. Sales people often tend to be far more ‘people facing’ whereas marketers like to do their brilliance from behind the scenes. That said, it’s a great pat on the back to get an award and receive recognition says Nick Ferris.

Another great thing about entering your marketer or team for awards is it builds that team value and bonding. Marketing is often a team effort and it’s a great way to recognize the many people who helped put a particular campaign together. Awards are also a great way of getting your company recognized in the industry.

Companies that win awards can be viewed as successful or places people want to go to work says Nick Ferris. Having an award winning marketing team can attract even more great talent to want to work with you as it shows the marketing is ground breaking, inspirational or doing something new and different. That will of course attract people to want to work at your company. Plus it will help keep people too.

So yes, awards can be a very useful part of marketing. Don’t overdo it and don’t do something just to try and get an award says Nick Ferris, but use it sparingly and when it makes sense to do so.
